Speaking up for Kashmir in Foreign Office Questions

Julie Cooper MP speaking in Foreign Office Questions

In the House of Commons on Tuesday morning I raised the issue of Kashmir with the Foreign Secretary and asked him whether the Government will take steps to support self-determination for the people of Kashmir?

I also reminded the Minister that in 1948 the UN Security Council passed resolution 47 instructing the Governments of India and Pakistan to prepare for a plebiscite to determine the future of Kashmir. Almost 70 years have passed, thousands of Kashmiri men, women and children have been slaughtered, atrocities are committed daily, yet there is still no sign of any action to allow these people to vote on this most important issue.

I finished by asking the Government to give assurances that the British Government will do everything in its power to support the people of Kashmir and their right to self-determination.
